Although her claim to fame may be less than obvious, recently Kim Kardashian has been in the news for her ongoing divorce from ex husband and NBA star Kris Humphries. The now-separated couple is infamous for having a longer divorce than marriage. The couple was married in 2011, but split up 72 days later. After a 1 and a half year divorce, the couple has at last finalized their divorce. However, the shocking length has left many Montgomery residents wondering - what took so long?
What prolongs most celebrity divorces is typically money and property division. Many celebrities have a vast amount of wealth, especially when two highly successful people get married. Determining what is premarital property and marital property can be very difficult process for most celebrities. However, in Kris and Kim's case, one can only guess how much was actually acquired during the brief 72 days they spent together.
Often times to address the potential issues, a prenuptial agreement is signed prior to the marriage so that in the event of a divorce, the property division process will be sped up. Surprisingly, even with a prenup, Kris and Kim's divorce still took a long time. It's not exactly clear why - details about discussions are generally kept from the public eye - but it may have been down to a couple of issues, including the pair's busy schedules and difficulty settling on attorney's fees.
Big time celebrity divorces may involve more scandal or higher numbers than the average American divorce, but many of the same issues need to be worked out between the parties. Like many celebrity couples, Montgomery residents facing divorce may face a variety of issues from child custody to property division. An attorney can provide help and advice to anyone going through the divorce process.
