Divorce has found its way into the lives of many Americans, leaving many angry and frustrated to say the least. Divorce is sometimes the most difficult period in an individual’s life. Between child custody, alimony and property division, many factors contribute to the difficulty of the dissolution of marriage. Throughout the years, divorce has increases amongst certain demographics. For the Baby Boomer generation, the divorce rate has more than doubled within the last 20 years. Many Montgomery residents want to know why.
As society grows more accepting of divorce and the average life expectancy increases, many Americans over the age of 50 have decided to call it quits with their marriage. In 1990, only 1 out of 10 Baby Boomers were divorced. Decades later, the rate increased to 1 out of 4 Baby Boomers who are now divorced. In today’s society, it is not unusual for an American to enter their second or third marriage. The reality is that divorce has become more acceptable at an older age.
While many marriages last for an entire lifetime, there are many that are not meant to be. An unhappy marriage can often be damaging to both parties. Rather than live unhappily ever after, many Baby Boomers are filing for divorce and have found happiness after the process is over. In fact, 3 out of 4 divorced Baby Boomers claim to have made the right decision by ending their marriage.
Divorce may not always be a walk in the park for every couple. Depending on if the couple has children under 18 from the marriage, child custody and child support may require some additional effort to solve. Property division can also take some time to settle.
