Singer’s wife files for divorce in Tennessee; seeks child custody

| Apr 11, 2014 | Child Custody and Visitation

In the aftermath of a divorce, one of the major issues that any separating couple in Clarksville, Tennessee, or anywhere else in the country, argues about is the custody of the children. Similarly, disputes over child custody may also exist between unmarried couples. In such cases, courts play a crucial role in deciding on the type of parenting plan that will be in the best interests of the child.

Country music fans in Tennessee will be interested to learn that country music singer Trace Adkin’s wife, Rhonda Adkins, recently filed for divorce in a Tennessee court near Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences. In addition to legal fees and alimony, Rhonda is also seeking primary custody of their three daughters. The daughters, who are between ages nine and 16 years, are living in the couple’s home in Brentwood, Tennessee with their mother since the separation.

In a joint statement issued by Trace’s publicist, the couple requested that the public respect their privacy and clearly stated that the best interests of their children come before anything else. The couple is breaking up after being married for 17 years. Trace, who is on his third marriage, has been struggling with alcoholism after being sober for 12 years. He recently sought rehabilitative treatment in Florida.

Whether a separation is amicable or disputed, child custody is probably the most important decision that parents need to make regarding their children. Since the reason for every separation is unique, child custody orders issued by courts vary from case to case. While in some cases, courts award joint custody, in others the courts may grant primary custody to one parent with visitation rights for the other.

Most parents would want to spend as much time as possible with their child. It is extremely important to convey that to the judge. With the help of an attorney, a parent may be able to ensure that the parenting plan ordered by the court is fair to the parents as well as to the child.
