Strange but true divorce tales: Tennessee man sets house on fire

| Jun 4, 2012 | Divorce

As many of you likely know, a Tennessee woman allegedly asked her husband for a divorce earlier this week and then moved out of the couple’s home in Clarksville. The next day, the 36-year-old husband reportedly set that home on fire causing an estimated $40,000 in damage. He was later arrested and charged with arson.

While “scorched earth” tactics are certainly not unheard of in bitter divorce cases, they rarely involve any actual fire. Yet as bizarre or at least counterproductive as this man’s actions might seem — it is hardly the strangest divorce story out there.

In July 2005, a surgeon who had donated a kidney to his wife during their marriage asked her to return the organ after she filed for divorce.

In 2008, a man who wanted to make sure that he received an exact 50/50 split of marital assets got some of his relatives to help him saw his house in half.

In 2007, a couple agreed to a divorce but neither the husband nor the wife was willing to move out of the marital home. After tiring of their arguments, the judge solved the problem for them to have a wall built that would divide the house in half.

In 2008, a woman left her husband after his prosthetic penis extension snapped off during sex.

In 2001, a woman in China filed for divorce after discovering that her husband was being unfaithful. She was reportedly tipped off to infidelity when the family’s pet mynah bird started to say words such as “divorce” and “be patient.”
