Your Legal Guide Through Life’s Twists And Turns

Shared parenting is in the best interests of the child

In Tennessee, it is common knowledge that divorced parents may have a hard time sharing the custody of their child. Newly divorced couples may need to take time to adjust to their new situation at the end of their marriage, and in this process the couple’s children may face significant turmoil. The children’s wellbeing may be affected if child custody is not settled properly.

One child in Pennsylvania is experiencing a situation similar to that of many children in Tennessee who go through their parents’ divorce. During the boy’s birthday, his parents both attended the party. The parents set aside their differences and focused on the child’s needs. The parents were able to do this through the love they both share for their son.

According to experts, this situation is common nowadays. One in every two children will experience their parents’ divorce before they turn 18. Children may have a hard time adjusting to the changes after the divorce. If marital disputes are not settled properly, the conflict may have an adverse effect on children’s behavior.

A study was conducted that examined 20 divorced or separated mothers between the ages of 26 and 49. The mothers shared physical and legal custody of their children, ages 21 months to 12 years. Twenty percent had a friendly relationship with ex-spouses, 35 percent showed improvements with co-parenting relationships and about 45 percent had a hard time continuously.

Those interested in improving their parenting relationship with an ex-spouse should note that in co-parenting, communication is critical. Communicating through phone calls and e-mails can help in discussing issues without the children overhearing. Parents may also share an online calendar that will help track the important events taking place in the children’s lives.

Of course, it’s not always easy to obtain the custody rights that allow a parent to have an active role in their child’s life. Those who are facing a child custody decision may benefit from consulting an attorney to ensure that their custody and visitation rights will be protected in the custody agreement. A fair custody arrangement is an important first step in creating a cordial, good-natured co-parenting relationship.
