When couples determine that their marriage is no longer going to work, there are various important issues to consider. When the couple has children, dealing with custody and support issues is usually on the top of the list. When it comes to custody, it is customary to consider that the mother of the children would get sole or at least joint custody, but the modern system looks at fathers’ rights and in some situations grants fathers sole custody of their children.

The singer-guitarist of Black Keys, Dan Auerbach, is currently dealing with allegations of abuse in his divorce filings that focus of the custody of their child. Auerbach’s estranged wife has cited allegations of unspecified abuse that ultimately led to an incident where she cut herself superficially on her legs and ankles. According to the singer, his wife has made two suicide attempts but she denies these allegations.

According to the records, Auerbach’s estranged wife has sought treatment at a facility and at this time he has primary custody of their child. At this time, the mother has been granted supervised visitation rights. In a situation like this, the court needs to determine what is in the best interest of the child. In this case, it is important that the child is not in any potential danger, which resulted in the father obtaining sole custody of the child.

A father may maintain full custody of the child even if the mother does prove that she is no danger. The father might still provide the child more stability. In some situation, the parents could come up with a co-parenting plan and cooperate with one another when determining their shared time with the child. Ultimately, the factor that determines what agreement will be upheld is the best interest of the child.

During and after the divorce parents may not agree with custody arrangements for their child or children. This might require multiple modifications. Parents who are struggling to determine child custody agreements should understand their options and the required steps.
